Published by Kweb under Web 2.0 Hosting

I just upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.5 using Fantastico.

Lunarpages‘ Fantastico had the upgrade available today. Blue Host has Fantastico Deluxe but the upgrade is not available yet.

No problems so far.

Web 2.0 Web Hosting

Published by Kweb under Web 2.0 Hosting

What do you need from a web host for your web 2.0 business?

  • Unlimited Domains
  • Many or Unlimited SQL Databases
  • Lots of Bandwidth
  • PHP 5
  • Fantastico or Fantastico Deluxe

Unlimited Domains

Even if you only have one blog, one podcast, one theme, you will likely want to add domains for special purposes, even special events. Since many hosts now support unlimited add on domains you should make sure the host you choose is not limited to one.

SQL Databases

Each Wordpress blog requires one SQL database. While you may not think you need more than one now it will come up eventually that you want another one for a special web 2.0 application or function. Don’t be stuck having to pay an extra fee for something you can get elsewhere included in your low cost mothly package.

Lots of Bandwidth

If you have a regular podcast or large number of visitors downloading large images regularly you will want to make sure you have enough monthly bandwidth to support your needs for the forseeable future to avoid hassles later. If you do get beyond the bandwidth listed below you will be so happy at your success that the effort to deploy an alternative solution won’t seem much of a challenge!

Here is a chart showing what the bandwidth requirements would be for podcasts of varying length, frequency per month, and number of subscribers. Even the highest bandwidth and storage requirements shown below are well below what is provided in even the basic packages for the best Web 2.0 web hosts.

Podcast Bandwidth Calculation

PHP 5

While even the new upcoming Wordpress 2.5 will only require PHP 4.3, you want to make sure your web host is ahead of the curve so you don’t have trouble down the road. There are some Web 2.0 applications you may want to use for your social network sites that require PHP 5. What you don’t want to have happen is find out that there is some great service you can provide your subscribers but can’t unless a major headache of transfering to another host is required. You may also want easy “click of a button” downgrade from PHP 5 to PHP 4.x for some legacy apps that don’t support PHP 5 or PHP 5 has pending bug fixes that the host’s version has not upgraded to.

Fantastico or Fantastico Deluxe

Having this in the Cpanel with Wordpress option means you can set-up a blog in 2 minutes with the press of a button and filling out 5 fields of information. With no need to configure SQL databases, there is little risk of problems in set-up and anyone can do it.

Here are some good WEB 2.0 Hosts;
